Some manufacturers have developed innovative toys that playfully introduce children to programming. We have seen an example of how such a learning toy works and whether it can fulfill its purpose.
Fisher-Price has developed a toy, the Flitzi caterpillar, aimed at children aged three to six. The caterpillar consists of a motorized head and eight individual segments that can be easily put together. With the help of the individual elements, the caterpillar moves forward, left or right. These segments can be recombined again and again to change the path of the caterpillar. The caterpillar makes noises and each element illuminates one after the other and moves the caterpillar in the corresponding direction, ie straight, left or right.
This allows the child to directly see how the combination of the segments affects the movement of the caterpillar. Sequential thinking is thus practiced quite playfully. So the child has to plan how the segments must be combined so that the caterpillar moves under the table or chair.
We really liked the cuddly Flitzi, because children can playfully discover what initial programming attempts look like. Plan processes and think logically – quite playfully
This encourages children to plan processes and think logically ahead. This is the first step towards programming and quite playful. It is not the manufacturer who dictates what the toy should do, but the child who plays with it. However, you need a lot of space for a course, for too small children’s room, the caterpillar is not suitable. Even deep carpets are rather disturbing, better is a laminate or parquet floor or in summer the asphalt of the way in front of the door.
